Baccarat 101: Complete Rulebook & Strategy Guide

Master the history, strict drawing rules, scoreboard mechanics, commissions, and modern online side bets.

1. History & Origins

Invented in Italy during the 15th century by gambler Felix Falguiere, who called it 'baccara' (meaning zero, as all face cards and tens count as zero). It later spread to France, where it became known as Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque, eventually evolving into the modern Punto Banco played globally today.

2. Standard Drawing Rules

Baccarat follows strict, automated drawing tables. Players do not make strategic choices on hits or stands: • Player: Stands on a total of 6 or 7; draws a third card on 0–5 (unless Banker has a natural 8 or 9). • Banker: Follows a conditional drawing matrix based on the Banker's total (0–6) and the Player's third card. • Naturals: If either hand totals an 8 or 9 on the initial deal, it is a 'Natural' and the game ends immediately.

3. Scoreboard Roads & The Red/Blue Color Myth

Understanding scoreboards is essential for tracking shoe trends: • Bead Road (珠盘路): Records every single hand outcome literally. Red = Banker win, Blue = Player win, Green = Tie. • Big Road (大路): The primary tracking matrix. Red circles = Banker wins, Blue circles = Player wins. • Derived Roads (Big Eye Boy, Small Road, Cockroach Pig): ⚠ CRITICAL MISCONCEPTION: Unlike the Big Road, RED and BLUE in derived roads DO NOT mean Banker or Player! Red indicates pattern regularity/predictability (repetition or alternating symmetry), while Blue indicates chaos/choppiness. Many veteran players mistakenly bet Banker on red marks and Player on blue marks in derived roads, which leads to heavy losses.

4. Side Bet Payout Standards

Popular side bets offer high payouts but carry higher house edges: • Dragon Bonus: Pays based on natural wins or winning margin (e.g., Natural 9 winning by 9 points pays up to 30:1). • Panda 8: Pays 25:1 if the Player wins with a 3-card total of 8.

5. Commission Structures

Different tables handle Banker win commissions differently: • Regular (Standard 5% Commission): Banker wins pay 0.95:1 (a 5% commission is deducted). • EZ Baccarat (Dragon 7): No commission on Banker wins, except when Banker wins with a 3-card total of 7 (known as the 'Dragon 7'), which results in a push (tie) for Banker bets. • No Commission (Super 6 / Half Pay): Banker wins pay 1:1, except when Banker wins with a total of 6, which pays 0.5:1 (half pay).

6. Modern Online Casino Side Bets

Online platforms feature unique specialty wagers: • Super 8: Wins if the first two cards for Player or Banker form an 8. • Small Tie vs. Big Tie: - Small Tie: Total card count for both hands combined equals 4. - Big Tie: Total card count for both hands combined equals 5 or 6.
